Approximatley 70% of those who abuse prescription medications get them from family or friends, often by taking them right out of the medicine cabinet. (SAMHSA, 2006)

Free Local Disposal:

The Laconia Police Department has a PERMANENT medication collection box, located in the foyer of the Laconia Police Department at 126 New Salem St.  

The Collection Box is accessible 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.  This collection box is constructed in such a manner and of materials that make it tamper-proof.

The following guidelines apply:

  • ONLY pharmaceutical drugs are to be placed in the box (over-the-counter OR prescription medication).

  • This VOLUNTARY collection/disposal process is FREE and ANONYMOUS.

  • NO needles, syringes, or lancets will be collected. If you need to dispose of these items, Concord Hospital- Laconia has specific collection days for sharps. Please call 603-524-3211 for more information.

 Partnership for Public Health has a limited number of lockboxes and Deterra bags available.

 Tips for Preventing Misuse:

  • Keep all of your current medications in a SAFE and SECURE location where others cannot access them, ideally a location that can be locked.

  • Use a Medication Tracking Form to keep track of your current medications, both over-the-counter and prescription.

  • Regularly dispose of your unused or expired medications. FLUSHING medications is NOT recommended.
